Learning Disability Week 2019

This years learning disability week theme is all about sport and how to make it easy for someone with a learning disability to be able to take part in sport where they live.

Sport and physical activity can reduce loneliness and isolation. Benefits for people with and without a learning disability include improved health and well being, empowerment and greater social inclusion. Sport and physical activity between people with and without a learning disability can also help to improve attitudes and challenge negative views towards people with a learning disability.

During Learning Disability Week 2019 which falls from 17 to 23 June, Mencap promoted they would like as many people as possible, with and without a learning disability, to get involved in inclusive sporting activities in their local communities.

HS4LC are very proud to be supporting Learning disability week ( #LDWeek2019 ) as we are a local Harrogate charity that works for the benefits of adults with learning disabilities and autism by offering a day centre and also two residential care homes. In addition to the day centre we also run the HS4LC Routes to Employment programme and the HS4LC Healthy Hearts campaign.

The HS4LC Healthy Hearts Campaign fits in perfectly with this years Learning Disability week theme. The campaign was set up because we recognised the facts, that unfortunately there are huge health inequalities for people with learning disabilities, they often do not have easy access to facilities. This can be because they cannot take a member of staff with them or they simply cannot afford to go to a gym. We wanted to help and encourage our local learning disability community to increase the amount of physical activity they take part in by offering FREE and EASY access to a fully equipped gym in a safe environment.

At the Harrogate Skills for Living Centre gym we run gym drop in sessions and other fitness sessions that people can partake in by themselves or in groups. We are also launching a whole new gym timetable for 2019/20 which will start in September.

In keeping with this years Learning Disability Week theme, we thought we would take this opportunity to share some of our photos from our gym and fitness sessions with you.
