So, sow good!

Did you know this week (13th - 19th August) is National Allotments Week?

The theme of this year’s National allotments week is to highlight the importance of growing your own food, and at the HS4LC allotment we do just that!

National Allotments Week started in 2002 as a way of raising awareness of allotments and the role they play in helping people to live healthier lifestyles, grow their own food, develop friendships and bolster communities. The campaign week is still thriving 12 years later!

The HS4LC allotment group have been very busy this year.

We are now able to have the Thursday mornings down at the allotment as it is now after a lot of hard work, wheelchair and walker accessible.

At the top part of the allotment we have two raised beds. Growing in them we have: peas, peppers, tomatoes, basil and now strawberries (not ready to fruit till next year though)

Produce we are harvesting this month includes:

  • Blackcurrants and redcurrants

  • Spinach- loads of the stuff.

  • Potatoes

  • Tomatoes

  • Rhubarb

  • Beetroot

  • Herbs: sage, rosemary & basil

We have used some of the produce including blackcurrants and redcurrants in the cooking classes at the skills centre and we also have some in the freezer ready to be made by the allotment group into jams on a rainy day when we will be in the kitchen rather than the garden.

We also have plans for some of our beetroot, as we are going to be making beetroot chocolate brownies for an upcoming HS4LC event. Yum Yum!

In September we have our new group running on a Thursday called Allotment: Plot to Plate, this course will show students how to plant and grow vegetables in our allotment and make delicious recipes from the produce throughout the course. This is a new and exciting course/group for 2018/19!

We also want to say a special thank you to all the allotment plot holders at the Jubliee allotments and also the committee for their help with watering our plot in the heatwave we have had, and also the kindness they show the HS4LC allotment group staff and students when visiting!
