This week we had something different and very exciting for the students at the HS4LC day centre...The York Chocolate Story came in to hold a Chocolate making workshop.
The workshop was great fun and a little messy but everyone had a great time and got to take home all their handmade goodies.
At York’s Chocolate Story you can discover the stories behind the greatest names in chocolate. While other British cities were built on steel, coal or wool, York’s fame and fortune have rested on chocolate for almost 300 years: thanks to the vision and invention of its great entrepreneurial families, not to mention the industry and dedication of its people. Though much has changed over the centuries, York remains the UK’s home of chocolate. The York Chocolate Story has a shop in the centre of York and offer guided and interactive tours as well as their shop, we were very lucky for them to come in to the HS4LC centre to give a in-house chocolate workshop to our students.
Mark from the York’s Chocolate Story came into the centre to deliver the workshop to our Enterprise group. We held two sessions one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning group described the class as “fun” and “messy” and the afternoon class had a great time making white chocolate and dark chocolate truffles.
Mark was fantastic with the whole group and made it very interesting for all involved, he even discussed the ingredients in chocolate and also each process involved in making the chocolatey treats in detail including the perfect temperature for melting chocolate.
Each member of the workshop made and decorated a chocolate shape of their design and also made different flavoured chocolate truffles. We had a variety of flavoured fillings including praline and Malteaser and to finish the truffles off we had chocolate, strawberry and passion fruit crumble coatings.
Fran our lead tutor for the workshop said " A massive thank you to Mark and The York Chocolate Story, Mark was fantastic from the get go with the students and had an instant rapport with them. All the students were very engaged with the workshop which was great to see!" Fran also added "this workshop has been a great introduction for our enterprise group into the art of chocolate making and hopefully will lead to us launching a HS4LC chocolate enterprise in the near furture!"
Once finished with making the truffles, the group were able to bag their handmade sweets up and finish off with a colourful ribbon to take home! (They all looked super tasty and like they were straight out of the shop!)
Overall the workshop was a massive hit and everyone involved had a great day!
