The HS4LC allotment is at the Jubilee Allotments, Bilton Hall Lane in Starbeck. We run an allotment club on a Thursday for all the students and residents of HS4LC.
The allotment has been a great ongoing project to add to HS4LC, we currently run a Thursday morning and afternoon group for residents from both Brackenley and Briardene and also students from the skills centre.
We believe that the allotment brings a lot of positives to the group including copious amounts of fresh Yorkshire air and exercise. It also leads to the group learning about food growing, learning about healthy food and healthy eating through occasional cooking sessions using the herbs, veg & fruit we are growing. We also have the opportunity to take fresh produce home too, but overall the camaraderie of working together as a team to develop the allotment is the highlight for both staff and members of the group.
Recently our Thursday morning group have been preparing for spring/summer: seed sorting, seed planting and seedling pricking out. Our Thursday afternoon group have been preparing the allotment with a lot of digging; shoveling manure and compost, helping to build raised beds and planting; weeding etc. Currently we are transforming the new allotment that we took over in winter to make it accessible for people in wheelchairs. We have built 2 raised beds and next need to improve the paths so we can get wheelchairs on there.
The allotment project is for everyone at HS4LC not just for the clients who come to the allotment group. We want to be growing lots of lovely fruit, herbs and veg which the cooking groups and both care homes can use. We want to promote healthy, fresh, seasonal, vegetable & fruit with all our clients (and staff!)
Last year we even made mince pies and salad for the Christmas party using produce from the allotment and our aim is to increase the allotment produce used well by all at HS4LC.
