Bake Sale for World Autism Awareness Week!

The 1st - 7th of April is World Autism Awareness Week. We chose to hold a bake sale to show our support for The National Autistic Society as part of World Autism Awareness Week as they actively try to change the attitude towards and help transform lives of adults and children with autism in the UK.

Even in 2019 there is still a lot of misunderstanding with what autism is and how it effects people. Autism is a lifelong disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world. There are approximately 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK.

Autistic people feel, see and hear the world differently to other people. If you are autistic, you are autistic for life; autism is not an illness or disease and cannot be 'cured'. Some people feel being autistic is a fundamental aspect of their identity. Some autistic people also have learning disabilities and mental health issues.

Here are some autism facts:

As Harrogate Skills for Living Centre (HS4LC) is a charity working for the benefit of adults with learning disabilities and autism in Harrogate, we felt the need to show our support for World Autism Awareness Week!

Our Skills for Independence: Cooking group made the cupcakes using the Spectrum cupcakes recipe from the National Autisic Society bake sale pack. Our Money Enterprise: Baking group put all the finishing touches to the cupcakes including icing them in all different colours to get them sale ready!

We raised a total of £60 for the National Autistic Society! A big well done and an even bigger thank you to everyone involved at HS4LC!
